This week’s ‘Five Minutes With’ features Washington Square Partners’ founder and managing partner Paul Travis. He talks about his mentor, favorite NY building, and what makes him proud of City Point – an Awards for Excellence in Mixed-Use Development finalist.
Who was the most influential person who left a mark on your career and what was the best advice he or she gave you?
Bruce Ratner. He always told me not to be satisfied with the same answers everyone else is getting, but rather to think out of the box about what is possible.
What is your favorite building in New York that isn’t one of yours and why?
Grand Central Station. I’m always amazed about how it manages to be a great transportation portal, a world class public space and a successful mixed-use center for Midtown all at the same time.
What makes you most proud of your ULI NY Awards finalist?
We made a conscious decision to build City Point differently than most private projects of its scale and to include the community. Over 65% of our construction workforce are local residents and minorities, most of our building staff is from the community, and our retail leasing approach has been to serve everyone. I think you feel it every time you walk into City Point.
