The Urban Land Institute is hiring a Senior Vice President of Councils to provide vision and strategic leadership for the organization’s Council Program.
The Senior Vice President of Councils, reporting to the CEO and functioning as a member of the senior leadership team, will provide vision and strategic leadership for the organization’s Council Program. The Senior Vice President of Councils will be responsible for maximizing the value of the Council Program, which includes leveraging the Council Program potential to ULI and adding value to Council members to further the organization’s mission.
The Senior Vice President of Councils will create a vision for the Council Program, identify opportunities for new Councils, identify and create opportunities to integrate the Council Program into the rest of ULI and greatly increase membership and participation. The Senior Vice President will work closely with the ULI’s Vice Chair, Councils and the Council Counselors to broaden and highlight Council initiatives.
Specific responsibilities include:
Strategic Recruitment and Thoughtful Expansion of the Council Program
- Responsible for creating and fulfilling vision, strategic planning and design of the Council Program.
- Leverages extensive experience and contacts in real estate to develop meaningful relationships with members and non-members for purposes of identifying opportunities to highlight and expand all aspects of the Council Program.
- Strategically and thoughtfully increases membership, participation and new Councils.
- Identifies prospects for Council Leadership positions.
Collaboration of Relationships
- Collaborates closely with other ULI Executives, including the Chief Content Officer, Executive Vice President of District Councils, and Senior Vice President, Convenings, to create an overall cohesive approach and meaningful experience for members of ULI’s Councils.
- Communicates the benefits of the Council Program to the organization. Formally and informally educates ULI staff and creates awareness of opportunities that can help members maximize effectiveness of the Council Program. Facilitates and connects the delivery of relevant Council content to all facets of ULI’s program of work.
- In collaboration with the Executive Vice President, Development, explores revenue-generating opportunities via the Council Program.
- Fosters strategic working relationships outside of ULI both within the industry and outside as appropriate. Acts as an external spokesperson and representative to a wide range of key constituents. Represents ULI in external Council-related meetings and panels.
- Works closely with the ULI Foundation in identifying philanthropic opportunities to leverage the work of both the Councils and the Foundation.
Meeting Planning and Administration of Councils
- Leads conceptual, programmatic, administrative, logistics and functions of Council Programs. Ensures that councils operate within the parameters of ULIs’ by-laws.
- Oversees the agendas and logistics of all Council meetings. Coordinates with ULI staff and members in conjunction with the planning and execution of ULI semi-annual Council meetings–including speaker confirmations, agendas, budgets and other logistics.
- Provides overall direction of the Council Program within ULI’s member database, ensuring proper maintenance of member records, membership, payments and wait lists.
- Responsible for generating annual department budget, as applicable, in consultation with CFO.
The Senior Vice President of Councils will have a deep understanding of ULI and its membership, specifically the inner workings of the Council Program. The Senior Vice President of Councils will be a strategic leader capable of leveraging the Council Program across the organization to further ULI’s mission. Strategic Relationship Building Skills
The incumbent will have a sophisticated understanding of relationship building at ULI, with Council members, stakeholders and the external community and how to leverage them. The ideal candidate will have advanced networking, recruitment and sourcing skills. The incumbent will be able to successfully leverage business relationships into expansion for the Council Program.
The successful candidate will have a natural ability to energize and encourage others to collaborate effectively while motivating and managing the abilities of the Councils’ resources. Must be able to set and manage the priorities of the Council Program.
The incumbent will have the proven ability to create a strategic vision, ambition and energy to move the initiatives across the organization forward while being a catalyst for new ideas, new concepts and projects.
The incumbent will possess creative thinking skills characterized by strong communication and motivation skills; a reputation for developing unique approaches to challenging problems and persuading others to support them.
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree in business, real estate, urban planning or a related field preferred.
- ULI member strongly desired. 15+ years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in a sophisticated, global membership environment.
- In depth knowledge and participation in ULI Council Programs and opportunities; proven ability to broker relationships with industry leaders to encourage their commitment and contribution to volunteer leadership of ULI locally via Council Programs.
- Must possess integrity, trustworthiness, and a strong reputation within the land use industry. Must be viewed with a high degree of credibility by ULI Council members and other ULI member leaders.
- Strong influence and executive presence. Strong executive networking, recruitment and sourcing skills.
- Must possess a strong collaborative focus and participative leadership style to broker alliances and create synergistic relationships within the organization.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, leadership, and management skills with the ability to work effectively in a complex matrix, client-focused and team-oriented culture. Must be a consensus builder respected for his/her consultative, thoughtful, yet definitive ideas.
- Ability to set the strategic direction, prioritize, communicate and deliver on goals and ensure everyone is motivated to achieve results.
- Strong communications skills, with ability to write, speak and present to large and small groups; excellent creative and problem solving skills; ability to multi-task and deliver programs across a wide range of priorities.
