Case Studies

Informed by the recommendations of the Tri-State Land Use Council Steering Committee, we convened a series of special focus group sessions across the region to introduce the initiative to public officials throughout the Tri-State region, and to learn about the land use challenges and opportunities facing their communities. These sessions took place throughout 2016 and engaged stakeholders from Northern New Jersey, Westchester and Fairfield counties, and Long Island. As part of the exercise, stakeholders were asked to identify land use challenges and opportunities facing their communities. Some common issues identified include:

  • ACCESS TO NYC JOB MARKET: Transportation, Mobility and Infrastructure Challenges
  • HOUSING AFFORDABILITY AND VARIETY
  • ZONING AND NIMBYISM AND/OR ANTI-GROWTH
  • TAX POLICY
  • DUPLICATION OF SERVICES / NEED FOR CONSOLIDATION / GENERAL FRAGMENTATION

The TSLUC Steering Committee used the information gathered in the initial sessions to strategize as to how ULI should reengage stakeholders, and best leverage the ULI network and resources to address these identified issues, and further amplify TSLUC as a nonpartisan forum that promotes regional collaboration on land use issues. As a result, the TSLUC set forth to produce a series of case studies focused around Transit Oriented Development projects within the Tri-State region, including:
