Cross Bronx Expressway: Repairing Historic Environmental Inequities Surrounding the CBE
December 18, 2024
December 18, 2024 — ULI New York (ULI NY) today released Cross Bronx Expressway: Repairing Historic Environmental Inequities Surrounding the CBE, a new report that outlines ways to improve community connectivity, livability, congestion, stormwater management, street-level temperatures, health outcomes, and noise and exhaust levels. The recommendations focused on redressing damage wrought by the 1940s arrival of the Robert Moses-designed expressway, focusing specifically on the impacts of climate change along the portion of the CBE between Weeks Avenue and Arthur Avenue, including the half-mile surrounding the CBE.
The report captures the work of a 10-person panel of interdisciplinary experts convened in May 2024 by ULI NY at the request of the Reimagine the Cross Bronx study team (the New York City Department of City Planning, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, as well as the City’s and State’s Departments of Transportation). Reimagine the Cross Bronx is a two-year city and state planning effort to involve neighborhoods in the planning process for the future of the CBE.
The ULI NY TAP report aims to serve as a tool for community engagement and neighborhood planning as work along the CBE progresses.
