‘Five Minutes With’ feat. Asher Abehsera, Founder & CEO of LIVWRK

We are kicking off this year’s ‘Five Minutes With’ series featuring Asher Abehsera, Founder & CEO of LIVWRK, whose project – Dumbo Heights – is a 2019 Awards Finalist for Excellence in Office Development.

Who has had the greatest influence on your career and what was the best advice he or she gave you?

David Walentas my former boss and Owner of Two Trees Management. He told me to dream big and go for it because he said he knew what I was capable of and anything less would be a waste of talent. He also said to focus on large scale projects because a small project requires the same commitment and investment of time and energy. Finally, he always said, “No guts, no glory” – and it’s embroidered on every one of his shirt cuffs.

What qualities do you think are essential to be an effective leader?

I think you need to be absolutely passionate about your work and perpetually focused on raising the bar. Simply caring in an authentic way is the singular best work ethic and naturally blazes a trail of example for others. Finally, the prize has to be bigger than the “deal”. The projects and deals are stepping stones on the yellow brick road. A leader needs to demonstrate an unequivocal commitment to the sanctity of family, quality of life, and hopefully committing success to good and important causes.

As a ULI NY Awards nominee, what makes you most proud of your project?

We were fortunate to effectuate our vision. Our office is onsite at the campus. We get to experience it firsthand. Rows of former loading docks are populated with visually beautiful food & beverage and health & wellness purveyors. Large factory floors have transformed into a community of innovators. The hero is never the real estate or the brand we created, it’s the people who now occupy it.
